Abstract: Transient non-equilibrium kinetic inductive voltage response of YBaCuO thin films to 20 ps pulses of YAG:Nd laser radiation with 0.63 μm and 1.5 μm wavelength has been revealed. By increasing the sensitivity of 100 ps resolution time registration system and diminishing light intensity (fluence 0.1-1 μJ2/cm2) and transport current (density j≤105 A/cm2) we observed a perculiar bipolar signal form with nearly equal amplitudes of each sign. The integration of the kinetic inductive response over time gives the result which is qualitatively of the same form as the response in the resistive and normal states: nonequilibrium picosecond scale component followed by bolometric nanosecond. Nonequilibrium response is interpreted as suppression of order parameter by excess of quasiparticles followed by a change in resistance in the resistive state and kinetic inductance in superconductive state.

Abstract: We have discovered a transient nonequilibrium kinetic inductive voltage response of YBCO thin films to 20 ps pulses of YAG:Nd laser radiation with 0.63 /spl mu/m and 1.54 /spl mu/m wavelength. By increasing the sensitivity of the read-out system with 100 ps resolution time and diminishing the light intensity (fluence 0.1-2 /spl mu/J/cm/sup 2/) and transport current (density /spl les/10/sup 5/ A/cm/sup 2/) we were able to observe a peculiar bipolar signal form with nearly equal amplitudes for each sign. Abstract: Voltage and microwave photoresponse of NbN thin films to modulated and pulsed optical radiation reveals, far below the superconducting transition, a response time consistent with the lifetime of nonequilibrium quasiparticles. We show that even in 5 nm thick films at 4.2 K the phonon trapping is significant resulting in a quasiparticle lifetime of a few nanoseconds that is an order of magnitude larger than the recombination time. Values and temperature dependence of the quasiparticle lifetime obey the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory and are in quantitative agreement with the electron-phonon relaxation rate determined from the resistive response near the superconducting transition. We discuss a positive effect of the phonon trapping on the performance of kinetic inductance detectors.

Abstract: A new type of fast detector is proposed, whose operation is based on the variation of the kinetic inductance of a superconducting film caused by nonequilibrium quasiparticles created by the electromagnetic radiation. The speed of the detector is determined by the rate of multiplication of photo-excited quasiparticles, and is nearly independent of the temperature, being less than 1 ps for NbN. Models based on the Owen-Scalapino scheme give a good description of the experimentally determined dependence of the power-voltage sensitivity of the detector on the modulation frequency. The lifetime of the quasiparticles is determined, and it is shown that the reabsorption of nonequilibrium phonons by the condensate has a substantial effect even in ultrathin NbN films 5 nm thick, and results in the maximum possible quantum yield. A low concentration of equilibrium quasiparticles and a high quantum yield result in a detectivity D*=1012 W−1·Hz1/2 at a temperature T=4.2 K and D*=1016 W−1·cm· Hz1/2 at T=1.6 K.

Abstract: Kinetic Inductance detectors have held a promise for the last decade to enable very large arrays, in excess of 10.000 pixels, with background limited sensitivity for ground- and Space Based sub-mm observatories. First we present the development of the detector chips of the A-MKID instrument: These chips contain up to 5400 detector pixel divided over up to 5 readout lines for the 350 GHz and 850 GHz atmospheric windows. The individual detectors are lens antenna coupled KIDs made of NbTiN and Aluminium that reach photon noise limited sensitivity at sky loading levels in excess of a few fW per pixel using either phase readout or amplitude readout. The ability to use phase readout is crucial as it reduces the requirements on the readout electronics of the instrument. Cross coupling between the KID resonators was mitigated by a combination of numerical simulations and a suitable position encoding of the readout resonance frequencies of the individual pixels. Beam pattern measurements are performed to demonstrate the absence of any cross talk due to resonator- resonator cross coupling. Second we present experiments on individual lens-antenna coupled detectors at 1.5 THz that are made out of aluminium. With these devices we have observed, as a function of the irradiated power at 1.5 THz, the crossover from photon noise limited performance to detector-limited performance at loading powers less than 0.1 fW. In the latter limit the device is limited by intrinsic fluctuations in the Cooper pair and quasiparticle number, i.e. Generation-Recombination noise. This results in a sensitivity corresponding to a NEP = 3.8·10 -19 W/√(Hz).
