Abstract |
Optical antennas are an emerging concept in physical optics. Similar to radiowave
and microwave antennas, their purpose is to convert the energy of free propagating radiation to localized energy, and vice versa. Optical antennas exploit the unique properties of metal nanostructures, which behave as strongly coupled plasmas at ptical frequencies. The tutorial provides an account of the historical origins and the basic concepts and parameters associated with optical antennas. It also reviews recent work in the field and discusses areas of application, such as light-emitting devices, photovoltaics, and spectroscopy. |

Abstract |
We present results of mesurments of the polarization response of asymetric spiral antennas coupled Ni-NiO-Ni diodes, over the wavelength range 10.2 to 10.7 μm. The feed structure of the antenna imposes an elliptical polarization singature that is different from the circular polarization expected from a symmetric spiral. We develop a lossy-transmission-line model yielding the measured polarization response. A combination of a balanced and an unbalanced mode is required. Reflected current waves from the arm ends are significant. |

Abstract |
A quantum cryptographic protocol based in public key cryptography combinations and private key cryptography is presented. Unlike the BB84 protocol 1 and its many variants 2,3 two quantum channels are used. The present research does not make reconciliation mechanisms of information to derive the key. A three related system of key distribution are described. |

Abstract |
We report a comprehensive set of experiments on wide and narrow thin-film strips of aluminum which test the predictions of recent localization theory. The experiments on wide films in the two-dimensional regime confirm the theoretical predictions and also yield insight into inelastic mechanisms and spin-orbit scattering rates. Our extension of the existing theory for one-dimensional systems to include spin-orbit scattering and Maki-Thompson superconducting fluctuations is verified by the experiments. We find clear evidence for one-dimensional localization, with inferred inelastic rates identical to those in two-dimensional films. The prediction of the localization theory for a dimensional crossover from two-dimensional to one-dimensional behavior is also confirmed. We have reanalyzed the results of some previous experiments on thin films and narrow wires in light of these results. |

Abstract |
It is well known that thermal fluctuations and material impurities affect the motion of vortices in superconductors. These effects are modeled by variants of a time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model containing either additive or multiplicative noise. Numerical computations are presented that illustrate the effects that noise has on the dynamics of vortex nucleation and vortex motion. For an additive noise model with relatively low variances, it is found that the vortices form a quasi-steady-state lattice in which the vortex core sizes remain roughly fixed but their positions vibrate. Two multiplicative noise models are considered. For one model having relatively long-range order, the sizes of the vortex cores vary in time and from one vortex to another. Finally, for the additive noise case, we show that as the variance of the noise tends to zero, solutions of the stochastic time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations converge to solutions of the corresponding equations with no noise. |
