Title (up) A comparison of graphene, superconductors and metals as conductors for metamaterials and plasmonics Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication Nature Photonics Abbreviated Journal Nat. Photon.
Volume 6 Issue 4 Pages 259-264
Keywords fromIPMRAS
Abstract Recent advancements in metamaterials and plasmonics have promised a number of exciting applications, in particular at terahertz and optical frequencies. Unfortunately, the noble metals used in these photonic structures are not particularly good conductors at high frequencies, resulting in significant dissipative loss. Here, we address the question of what is a good conductor for metamaterials and plasmonics. For resonant metamaterials, we develop a figure-of-merit for conductors that allows for a straightforward classification of conducting materials according to the resulting dissipative loss in the metamaterial. Application of our method predicts that graphene and high-Tc superconductors are not viable alternatives for metals in metamaterials. We also provide an overview of a number of transition metals, alkali metals and transparent conducting oxides. For plasmonic systems, we predict that graphene and high-Tc superconductors cannot outperform gold as a platform for surface plasmon polaritons, because graphene has a smaller propagation length-to-wavelength ratio.

Title (up) A weakly coupled semiconductor superlattice as a potential for a radio frequency modulated terahertz light emitter Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication Appl. Phys. Lett. Abbreviated Journal Appl. Phys. Lett.
Volume 100 Issue 13 Pages 131104 (1 to 4)
Keywords semiconductor superlattice
Abstract The bolometer response to THz radiation from a weakly coupled GaAs/AlGaAs superlattice biased in the self-oscillations regime has been observed. The bolometer signal is modulated with the frequency equal to the fundamental frequency of superlattice self-oscillations. The frequency spectrum of the bolometer signal contains higher harmonics whose frequency is a multiple of fundamental frequency of self-oscillations.

Title (up) An ultra-fast superconducting Nb nanowire single-photon detector for soft x-rays Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication Abbreviated Journal Appl. Phys. Lett.
Volume 101 Issue Pages
Keywords SSPD, SNSPD, x-ray, Nb
Abstract Although superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) are well studied regarding the

detection of infrared/optical photons and keV-molecules, no studies on continuous x-ray photon

counting by thick-film detectors have been reported so far. We fabricated a 100 nm thick niobium

x-ray SNSPD (an X-SNSPD) and studied its detection capability of photons with keV-energies in

continuous mode. The detector is capable to detect photons even at reduced bias currents of 0.4%,

which is in sharp contrast to optical thin-film SNSPDs. No dark counts were recorded in extended

measurement periods. Strikingly, the signal amplitude distribution depends significantly on the photon

energy spectrum.VC

Title (up) Broadening of hot-spot response spectrum of superconducting NbN nanowire single-photon detector with reduced nitrogen content Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication Abbreviated Journal J. Appl. Phys.
Volume 112 Issue Pages
Keywords SSPD, SNSPD, magnetron sputtering, spectrum, NbN film, nitrogen concentration
Abstract The spectral detection efficiency and the dark count rate of superconducting nanowire

single-photon detectors (SNSPD) have been studied systematically on detectors made from thin

NbN films with different chemical compositions. Reduction of the nitrogen content in the 4 nm

thick NbN films results in a decrease of the dark count rates more than two orders of magnitude

and in a red shift of the cut-off wavelength of the hot-spot SNSPD response. The observed

phenomena are explained by an improvement of uniformity of NbN films that has been confirmed

by a decrease of resistivity and an increase of the ratio of the measured critical current to the

depairing current. The latter factor is considered as the most crucial for both the cut-off

wavelength and the dark count rates of SNSPD. Based on our results we propose a set of criteria

for material properties to optimize SNSPD in the infrared spectral region. VC 2012 American

Title (up) Cascaded single-photon emission from the Mollow triplet sidebands of a quantum dot Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication Nature Photonics Abbreviated Journal Nat. Photon.
Volume 6 Issue 4 Pages 238-242
Keywords fromIPMRAS
Abstract Emission from a resonantly excited quantum emitter is a fascinating research topic within the field of quantum optics and is a useful source for different types of quantum light fields. The resonance spectrum consists of a single spectral line that develops into a triplet above saturation of the quantum emitter. The three closely spaced photon channels from the resonance fluorescence have different photon statistical signatures. We present a detailed photon statistics analysis of the resonance fluorescence emission triplet from a solid-state-based artificial atom, that is, a semiconductor quantum dot. The photon correlation measurements demonstrate both `single' and `cascaded' photon emission from the Mollow triplet sidebands. The bright and narrow sideband emission (5.9 × 106 photons per second into the first lens) can be conveniently frequency-tuned by laser detuning over 15 times its linewidth (Δv ~ 1.0 GHz). These unique properties make the Mollow triplet sideband emission a valuable light source for quantum light spectroscopy and quantum information applications, for example.

Title (up) Charge state manipulation of qubits in diamond Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication Nature Communications Abbreviated Journal Nat. Comm.
Volume 3 Issue 729 Pages 6
Keywords fromIPMRAS
Abstract The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre in diamond is a promising candidate for a solid-state qubit. However, its charge state is known to be unstable, discharging from the qubit state NV- into the neutral state NV0 under various circumstances. Here we demonstrate that the charge state can be controlled by an electrolytic gate electrode. This way, single centres can be switched from an unknown non-fluorescent state into the neutral charge state NV0, and the population of an ensemble of centres can be shifted from NV0 to NV-. Numerical simulations confirm the manipulation of the charge state to be induced by the gate-controlled shift of the Fermi level at the diamond surface. This result opens the way to a dynamic control of transitions between charge states and to explore hitherto inaccessible states, such as NV+.

Title (up) Conclusive quantum steering with superconducting transition-edge sensors Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication Nature Communications Abbreviated Journal Nat. Comm.
Volume 3 Issue 625 Pages 6
Keywords fromIPMRAS
Abstract Quantum steering allows two parties to verify shared entanglement even if one measurement device is untrusted. A conclusive demonstration of steering through the violation of a steering inequality is of considerable fundamental interest and opens up applications in quantum communication. To date, all experimental tests with single-photon states have relied on post selection, allowing untrusted devices to cheat by hiding unfavourable events in losses. Here we close this 'detection loophole' by combining a highly efficient source of entangled photon pairs with superconducting transition-edge sensors. We achieve an unprecedented ~62% conditional detection efficiency of entangled photons and violate a steering inequality with the minimal number of measurement settings by 48 s.d.s. Our results provide a clear path to practical applications of steering and to a photonic loophole-free Bell test.

Title (up) Current distribution and transition width in superconducting transition-edge sensors Type Journal Article

Volume 101 Issue Pages 242603

Abstract Present models of the superconducting-to-normal transition in transition-edge sensors (TESs) do not describe the current distribution within a biased TES. This distribution is complicated by normal-metal features that are integral to TES design. We present a model with one free parameter that describes the evolution of the current distribution with bias. To probe the current distribution experimentally, we fabricated TES devices with different current return geometries. Devices where the current return geometry mirrors current flow within the device have sharper transitions, thus allowing for a direct test of the current-flow model.Measurements from these devices show that current meanders through a TES low in the resistivetransition but flows across the normal-metal features by 40% of the normal-state resistance. Comparison of transition sharpness between device designs reveals that self-induced magnetic fields play an important role in determining the width of the superconducting transition.

Title (up) Detection efficiency of a spiral-nanowire superconducting single-photon detector Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication Abbreviated Journal
Volume Issue Pages
Keywords Critical current, Nanoscale devices, Superconducting photodetectors.
Abstract We investigate the detection efficiency of a spiral layout of a Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detector (SNSPD). The design is less susceptible to the critical current reduction in sharp turns of the nanowire than the conventional meander design. Detector samples with different nanowire width from 300 to 100 nm are patterned from a 4 nm thick NbN film deposited on sapphire substrates. The critical current IC at 4.2 K for spiral, meander, and simple bridge structures is measured and compared. On the 100 nm wide samples, the detection efficiency is measured in the wavelength range 400-1700 nm and the cut-off wavelength of the hot-spot plateau is determined. In the optical range, the spiral detector reaches a detection efficiency of 27.6%, which is ~1.5 times the value of the meander. In the infrared range the detection efficiency is more than doubled.

Title (up) Energy-gap dynamics of a superconductor NbN studied by time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy Type Abstract
Year 2012 Publication INIS Abbreviated Journal INIS
Volume 45 Issue 12 Pages 1-3
Keywords NbN energy gap
Abstract Using time-resolved terahertz (THz) spectroscopy we performed direct studies of the photoinduced suppression and recovery of the SC gap in a conventional SC NbN. Both processes are found to be strongly temperature and excitation density dependent. The analysis of the data with the established phenomenological Rothwarf-Taylor model enabled us to determine the important microscopic constants: the Cooper pair-breaking rate via phonon absorption and the bare quasiparticle recombination rate. From the latter we were able to extract the dimensionless electron-phonon coupling constant, λ=1.1±0.1, in excellent agreement with theoretical estimates. The technique also allowed us to determine the absorbed energy required to suppress SC, which in NbN equals the thermodynamic condensation energy (in cuprates the two differ by an order of magnitude). Finally, we present the first studies of dynamics following resonant excitation with intense narrow band THz pulses tuned to above and below the superconducting gap. These suggest an additional process, particularly pronounced near Tc, that could be attributed to amplification of SC via effective quasiparticle cooling.

Abstract We study the nonlinear response of current transport in a superconducting diffusive nanowire between normal reservoirs. We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally the existence of two different superconducting states appearing when the wire is driven out of equilibrium by an applied bias, called the global and bimodal superconducting states. The different states are identified by using two-probe measurements of the wire, and measurements of the local density of states with tunneling probes. The analysis is performed within the framework of the quasiclassical kinetic equations for diffusive superconductors.

Title (up) Frequency comb generation at terahertz frequencies by coherent phonon excitation in silicon Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication Nature Photonics Abbreviated Journal Nat. Photon.
Volume 6 Issue Pages 243–247
Keywords fromIPMRAS
Abstract High-order nonlinear light–matter interactions in gases enable the generation of X-ray and attosecond light pulses, metrology and spectroscopy1. Optical nonlinearities in solid-state materials are particularly interesting for combining optical and electronic functions for high-bandwidth information processing2. Third-order nonlinear optical processes in silicon have been used to process optical signals with bandwidths greater than 1 GHz (ref. 2). However, fundamental physical processes for a silicon-based optical modulator in the terahertz bandwidth range have not yet been explored. Here, we demonstrate ultrafast phononic modulation of the optical index of silicon by irradiation with intense few-cycle femtosecond pulses. The anisotropic reflectivity modulation by the resonant Raman susceptibility at the fundamental frequency of the longitudinal optical phonon of silicon (15.6 THz) generates a frequency comb up to seventh order. All-optical >100 THz frequency comb generation is realized by harnessing the coherent atomic motion of the silicon crystalline lattice at its highest mechanical frequency.
