Abstract |
Kinetic Inductance detectors have held a promise for the last decade to enable very large arrays, in excess of 10.000 pixels, with background limited sensitivity for ground- and Space Based sub-mm observatories. First we present the development of the detector chips of the A-MKID instrument: These chips contain up to 5400 detector pixel divided over up to 5 readout lines for the 350 GHz and 850 GHz atmospheric windows. The individual detectors are lens antenna coupled KIDs made of NbTiN and Aluminium that reach photon noise limited sensitivity at sky loading levels in excess of a few fW per pixel using either phase readout or amplitude readout. The ability to use phase readout is crucial as it reduces the requirements on the readout electronics of the instrument. Cross coupling between the KID resonators was mitigated by a combination of numerical simulations and a suitable position encoding of the readout resonance frequencies of the individual pixels. Beam pattern measurements are performed to demonstrate the absence of any cross talk due to resonator- resonator cross coupling. Second we present experiments on individual lens-antenna coupled detectors at 1.5 THz that are made out of aluminium. With these devices we have observed, as a function of the irradiated power at 1.5 THz, the crossover from photon noise limited performance to detector-limited performance at loading powers less than 0.1 fW. In the latter limit the device is limited by intrinsic fluctuations in the Cooper pair and quasiparticle number, i.e. Generation-Recombination noise. This results in a sensitivity corresponding to a NEP = 3.8·10 -19 W/√(Hz). |

Abstract |
We present a study of the large signal frequency response of an HEB mixer over a wide frequency range. In our experiments, we have subjected the HEB mixer to incident electromagnetic radiation from 0.3 GHz to 1 THz. The mixer element is an NbN film deposited on crystalline quartz. The mixer chip is mounted in a waveguide cavity, coupled to free space with a diagonal horn. At microwave frequencies, electromagnetic radiation is applied through the coaxial bias port of the mixer block. At higher frequencies the input signal passes via the diagonal horn feed. At each frequency, the incident power is varied and a family of I-V curves is recorded. From the curves we identify 3 distinct regimes of operation of the mixer separated by the phonon relaxation frequency and the superconducting energy gap frequency observed at about 3 GHz and 660 GHz respectively. In this paper, we will present observed curves and discuss the results of our experiment. |

Abstract |
New demonstrations for low temperature physics courses are described. Two transparent Dewar vacuum flasks fitting one inside the other with the external flask for nitrogen and the internal flask for helium are used. The helium temperature can be regulated in the 4.2 to 1.6 K range and the effects of reducing helium to the superfluid state at 2.17 K can be shown: boiling abruptly stops and superfluid flow appears. In order to show the electric and magnetic characteristics of superconductivity, a superconducting NbTi solenoid containing nonsuperconducting wire and germanium and superconducting Nb materials with different critical temperatures is placed in the helium refrigerant vessel. The fall of the resistance at the critical temperatures can be shown. In order to show magnetic field and superconductive current flow properties a shunt of superconductive material is connected in parallel to the coil and is enclosed in a teflon container with a heater which can vary its temperature. When it is heated and not superconductive, magnetic field effects can be demonstrated and when it is unheated and superconducting a continuous current can be demonstrated. |

Abstract |
For the first time, measurements have been made on the electron energy relaxation time due to the electron--phonon interaction in films of the YBaCuO superconductor. The results indicate a significant intensification of the electron--phonon interaction in this compound as compared with normal superconducting metals. |

Abstract |
