Abstract We developed a fiber-coupled superconducting nanowire single-photon detector system in a close-cycled cryocooler and achieved 24% and 22% system detection efficiencies at wavelengths of 1550 and 1315 nm, respectively. The maximum dark count rate was ~1000 counts/s.

Title High-quality fiber-optic polarization entanglement distribution at 1.3 μm telecom wavelength Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication Optics Letters Abbreviated Journal Opt. Lett.

Abstract We demonstrate high-quality distribution of 1.3 μm polarization-entangled photons generated from a fiber-coupled periodically poled KTiOPO4 waveguide over 200 m fiber-optic cables. Time-multiplexed measurements with a 19% efficient superconducting nanowire single-photon detector at the remote location show a detected flux of 5.8 pairs / s at a pump power of 25 μW and an average two-photon quantum-interference visibility of 97.7% without subtraction of accidentals.

Title Chiral diffraction gratings in twisted microstructured fibers Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication Optics Letters Abbreviated Journal Opt. Lett.
Volume 35 Issue 3 Pages 342-344
Keywords chiral diffracion gratings, optical fiber gratings, from chiralphotonics
Abstract We observed dips in transmission spectra of uniformly twisted pure-silica microstructured fibers. The spectral positions of the dips and their insensitivity to the surrounding medium are consistent with Bragg diffraction from the helical structure. The reproducibility of the variation of the dip wavelength with temperature up to 1000°C makes the chiral diffraction grating suitable for high-temperature sensing.

Title Photon-counting chirped amplitude modulation lidar using a smart premixing method Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Opt. Lett. Abbreviated Journal Opt. Lett.
Volume 38 Issue 21 Pages 4389-4392
Keywords photon-counting detector, lidar, Geiger mode APD, Geiger mode lidar
Abstract We proposed a new premixing method for photon-counting chirped amplitude modulation lidar (PCCAML). Earlier studies used the counting results of the returned signal detected by a Geiger mode avalanche photodiode detector (Gm-APD) to mix with the reference signal, called the postmixing method. We use an alternative method known as the premixing method, in which the reference signal is used to directly modulate the sampling gate width of the Gm-APD, and the mixing of the returned signal and the reference signal is completed before the Gm-APD. This premixing method is more flexible and may perform better than the postmixing method in terms of signal-to-noise ratio by cutting down a separated mixer commonly used in the postmixing lidar system. Furthermore, this premixing method lowers the demand for the sampling frequency of the Gm-APD. It allows the use of a much wider modulation bandwidth to improve the range accuracy and resolution. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to use the premixing method in the PCCAML system, which will benefit future lidar applications.
