Title IF gain bandwidth of a quasi-optical NbN superconducting HEB mixer Type Conference Article
Year 2007 Publication Proc. International conference on microwave and millimeter wave technology Abbreviated Journal Proc. ICMMT
Volume Issue Pages 1-3
Keywords HEB, mixer, gain bandwidth
Abstract In this paper, the intermediate frequency (IF) gain bandwidth of a quasi-optical NbN superconducting hot-electron bolometer (HEB) mixer is investigated at 500 GHz with an IF system incorporating with a frequency down-converting scheme which is able to sweep the IF signal in a frequency range of 0.3-4 GHz. The IF gain bandwidth of the device is measured to be 1.5 GHz when it is biased at a voltage of the minimum noise temperature, and becomes larger when the bias voltage increases.

Title Terahertz communications: a 2020 vision Type Book Chapter
Year 2007 Publication NATO Security through Science Series Abbreviated Journal
Volume 2007 Issue Pages 325-338
Keywords terahertz THz communications
Abstract We discuss basic considerations for potential short-range THz communication systems which may replace or supplement present WLAN systems in 10–15 years from now. On the basis of a few fundamental estimations we show that such a system will need a line-of-sight connection between receiver and emitter. To circumvent the blocking of the direct line-of-sight connection indoor THz communication systems will also have to rely on non-line-of-sight paths which involve reflections off the walls. The reflectivity of the walls can be enhanced by dielectric mirrors. This new scheme makes steerable high-gain antennas a necessity. Hence, a wireless THz communication system can not be a simple extension of the existing technology of today's local area networks. Instead it involves completely new concepts and ideas that have not yet been worked upon.

Title Modeling the electrical and thermal response of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors Type Journal Article

Abstract We modeled the response of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors during a photodetection event, taking into consideration only the thermal and electrical properties of a superconducting NbN nanowire on a sapphire substrate. Our calculations suggest that heating which occurs after the formation of a photo-induced resistive barrier is responsible for the generation of a measurable voltage pulse. We compared this numerical result with experimental data of a voltage pulse from a slow device, i.e. large kinetic inductance, and obtained a good fit. Using this electro-thermal model, we estimated the temperature rise and the resistance buildup in the nanowire, and the return current at which the nanowire becomes superconducting again. We also show that the reset time of these photodetectors can be decreased by the addition of a series resistance and provide supporting experimental data. Finally we present preliminary results on a detector latching behavior that can also be explained using the electro-thermal model.
